Travelling to Malta on a Budget

Contrary to popular belief, visiting a country located on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean isn’t that expensive. Most people think that Malta is a place that is visited only by the rich and powerful, but in truth, the majority of people who visit Malta spend less than $800 per visit.

Malta is a great place to visit and has many tourist attractions and activities, such as mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing. First thing’s first — how do we get to Malta?

Getting to Malta: By Airplane or by Ferry

There are two ways you can reach this island just off the Italian coast — by boat or by plane. One-way airline tickets will cost you about $60-$100, and if you want to go there with your own car or motorbike, you can take the ferry (one-way ticket costs between $60-$120).

Average Daily Food and Drink Costs in Malta

Meals in Malta will often cost less than meals in France or Germany. While the price of groceries is about the same, you’ll find cheaper restaurants, fast food places and diners in Malta. Food and drinks will cost you about $20-$30 per day, and if you feel like splurging a bit, a fine dinner at a restaurant will cost about $30.

Getting Around in Malta

If you came by ferry with your own car or bike, you’ll have no trouble getting around, as the gas prices are similar to other EU countries. If you came by plane, renting a car will cost you about $50 per day.

It might not be the best idea to do that since public transport in Malta is both cheap and great. If you buy one bus ticket, it will last for 2 hours, meaning you can enter any bus and go anywhere you want in the next 2 hours. The best part about this arrangement is that this privilege costs only $2.

As usual, taxi services are somewhere between public transport and renting your own car, and they cost about $15.

Accommodation Costs

In terms of accomodation, there are many hostels, hotels and Airbnb places. Less expensive hotels cost about $50 per night, and they might not be the best option for a traveller on a budget.

Hostels are a great option, and most of them cost about $10 per night (although they might cost $20 in peak summer time when demand increases). Airbnb is your best option if you’re travelling with lots of friends because you can share the costs of renting out an entire apartment or even a house.

How Much Do Fun Activities Cost?

There are some free activities you can enjoy, like long walks or swimming in the beautiful Mediterranean sea. However, if you like to visit museums, have in mind that most of them have an entry fee of around $10.

You can also go on awesome ferry rides that will take you around islands, or from one island to another (Malta has three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino, and you can visit each one of them). These ferry rides will cost you about $25.

There are lots of other historical and interesting places you can visit for free, like the Birgu Flea Market, Fomm ir-Riħ and the Delimara peninsula.

What was once a destination reserved for the super-rich is now open to most travellers, and Malta is one warm and welcoming place you should definitely visit.
